A Most Unusual Bug

I’ve lived in South Texas a long time and I’ve never seen anything quite like this before.

Anyone ever seen one of these? Know what it is? He measures about 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 inches in length.

All The Planes Have Been Grounded

Categories: 9-11.

For a long time after 9/11/2001, that one line from a song would not leave my mind. “All the planes have been gounded.” I couldn’t recall what the song was, only a couple of lines. (”Sandman” by America - I finally looked it up.) It was so eerie, each day, going to and from work. My drive took me by the airport, which was strangely quiet for several days.

I remember very well where I was when I first heard about the airplanes hitting the World Trade Center. I was already at work, and a co-worker called me from her home. She was watching the news while getting ready for work. From the moment she mentioned a second plane, I knew it was no accident.

There was a unity in this country, and around the world, for a while after 9/11/01. But it didn’t seem to last. Take some time today to stop and remember those who lost their lives on that day. And be thankful for the freedom that we have in this country. But remember, freedom isn’t free. It isn’t given, it is earned. And it can easily be lost.

I Might As Well Jump

Grayson and I play fetch with crumpled balls of paper. It started when he was very young. We were on the couch playing with a piece of paper. I told him I would throw it and that he should bring it back. Pure coincidence, maybe. At any rate, a game was born. Although at 2 1/2 years we don’t play it as often.

When Grayson was a kitten, and very small,

I could sit on the bed and throw the paper onto the top of the armoire. Grayson would jump from the bed to the armoire, retrieve the paper, put it in his mouth and then jump from the armoire to the bed. I would then throw the paper, and you get the picture.

As he’s gotten bigger, he can’t do such spectacular jumps.

He’s learned the limitations of his size. When he jumps onto his perch, his weight can tip the perch, depending on how far he jumps.

He hadn’t been on top of the armoire for quite a while. Mostly because he had no ready access to it. He was beyond jumping from bed to armoire. But I recently rearranged things and now he can jump on another piece of furniture and then get on top of the armoire. So, of course, he did.

Then came the question - How will he get down? The answer, a very careful jump from armoire to bed. Just for fun, I made some measurements and drew a diagram (you can click on it for a larger version):

Yes, and just to prove that I could still do it, I used my trigonometry class - the one I took when I rode a dinosaur to school - to measure the angles. It really is quite a spectacular jump for a 22 pound cat. The doors to the armoire rattle whenever he does.

And, he continues to do it. I think he likes to watch over us at night from up there.
